of low-hanging fruit, right? totally voluntary thing. i mean who could be opposed to this? the nra is opposed to this. the nra is wildly opposed to this. in tucson top, anniversary of the massacre there, the nra has come outraging against the tucson gun buyback program. they're trying to stop it. an nra board member is threatening that the nra will sue to stop tucson from destroying the guns that they handed over. the guns, regardless what their owners wanted, done with them, those guns must be sold to the highest bidder and put back into circulation. the nra says the state must not destroy the weapons that people handed over specifically so the weapons could be destroyed. instead, the nra says the state has to sell them, keep them in circulation, and thereby become a gun dealer itself. when your response to the political cliche of low-hanging fruit is something so cartoonishly insensitive, so cartoonishly villainous, you then bring upon us a second political cliche. you have jumped the shark. blocking voluntary efforts by people to get rid of their own guns because they want to vo

to give up the two guns that we have locked in a safe at home. what we do want is what the majority of nra members and other americans want: responsible changes in our laws to require responsible gun ownership and reduce gun violence." taking the argument beyond gunowners versus nongunowner, taking the argument beyond absolutist gun anarchy versus a complete gun ban, this turn away from that kind of binary nonsense is the kind of turn in the conversation that typically signifies that there might be movement ahead, that people are getting real about maybe actually getting something done. at the same time on the same day, on the same anniversary, another overture today from roxanna green. the mother of 9-year-old christina taylor green who was killed in the tucson shooting two years ago. she appears in an ad that appeared in seven cities today including washington, d.c. and tucson. this ad is paid for by the mayors against illegal guns action fund. but the thing i find striking about it is that it is not just an issue ad to try to get people riled up or even to get people thinking about this

are compiling it all and all the rest of the members. prar. >> the nra is sending a lobbyist and the nations's largest retailer of guns admitted it is underestimating the expectation to attend the meeting. it did under estimated it and back tracked the decision to participate. peter alexander joins us from the white house. peter, has the white house elaborated on vice president joe biden's comment on executive action? >> it's a good question and i finished a conversation with the president of the brady campaign against gun violence. i said did you learn anything more about what the action could look like? what could it look like? the white house or at least the vice president with more than 20 people in the room did not list any specific actions that could take place. that's one thing we are all hanging on here at the white house. to find out not just what the president may propose in terms of comprehensive reform that would require and need to go through congress, but what he could do today in the absence of congress, we are waiting to find out what that might be. >> joining us now is a dem

to gun control as we noted, vice president is going to meet this week with the nra that made news just being noted a matter of hours ago. it's to try to create more of that pressure. the president has made it very clear that not only did he win this election but said that the republicans obviously have a struggling brand, this wlous is communicated so perhaps more campaign-style events where the president was in michigan, he was in pennsylvania, he was just across the river in virginia, here as well. perhaps gabby giffords by his side or some of the survivors from newtown. i think that's some of the ways they believe to add pressure to bring across the republicans to not be an obstruction to him being able to accomplish some of those policies specifically on gun control and also trying to use some of those democrats like a-rated democrats from the nra, joe manchin, obviously, bob casey of pennsylvania, both may be able to add to that pressure specifically as it speaks to the issue of gun control. >> david, i want to talk to you about women and not in a brent musberger sort of way but a

[video clip] >> it's an honor to be here on behalf of 4.5 million moms, dads, sons, daughters in every state across our nation who make up the national rifle association of america. there are 4.5 million active members of the nra. they are joined by tens of millions of supporters throughout the country. it is on behalf of those millions of decent, hard- working, law-abiding citizens that i am here today to give voice to their concerns. the title of today's hearing is "what should america do about gun violence?" we believe the answer is to be honest about what works and honest about what does not work. teaching safe and responsible gun ownership works. the nra has a long and proud history of doing exactly that. our child safety program has taught 25 million young children that if they see a gun, they should do four things. stop, don't touch, the area, call an adult. as a result of this and other private-sector programs, fatal firearms accidents are at the lowest level in 100 years.

against gun manufacturers and was a huge handout to the nra. that bill only passed because donald rumsfeld's pentagon weigh ed in and said the pentagon need this had to protect the gun industry. what chuck hagel can do is help undo the damage the pentagon has done by pushing through a new memorandum that would say this really isn't something that the pentagon wants. obama will need his whole cabinet onboard to get this done. chuck hagel is someone we don't think about who could be a leader on gun control but could be instrumental in making sure gun control is something that happens. >> what would be the net effect of a memorandum like that? >> it would be a huge step forward for the pentagon in undoing what i call the unholy alliance between the pentagon and the nra. when this bill was passed wayne lapierre came out and said this is one of the biggest pro-gun legislation accomplishments in 20 years, and he was right. it did a huge amount of damage, the abilities of cities and straights across the country to hold gun companies accountable. if hagel goes forward and says, look, what the pent

millions of gun owners and their ultrapowerful lobbying group the nra. the latest push coming from senator dianne feinstein, the california democrat who authored the nation's original ban on assault weapons in the 1990s, but this ban would reportedly be much more strict. it would trap current gun owners and outlaw the future sale of some handguns and shotguns. joe johns joins us from washington, i understand that senator feinstein will show up holding a bushmaster. >> reporter: we don't know if she'll be holding it but we know she is going to have some weapons present that would be banned under her proposal, that would include bushmaster, as you know, they're fairly well-known, a bushmaster was we believe used by the shooter in newtown, connecticut. now, we know the broad outlines of what feinstein is likely to promow propose. it's been public for weeks. we look for detail, we expect a revised ban on the so-called military style assault weapons led to believe that means banning the sale, transfer, importation or manufacturing of about 150 firearms, some rifles, even possibly handguns, shot
